(Note 1: there will be about 6 billion humans in a few years;
90% of young childbearers live in "developing countries".
Continued increases in population are likely
to keep them largely undeveloped. Desires for a
"better life" cause them to borrow money and technology
from developed countries thereby setting themselves up
for economic enslavement should their economies fail!)
(Note:2 AS OF FALL, 1998, IT IS COMING TRUE! Recent
estimates indicate a birth rate decline over the whole
world. HOWEVER, as life extension "kicks in" and becomes
widespread, the population growth will again increase to perhaps
9 billion people (wild guess) in about 15 years - 2015.)
SOME IMPACTS OF BURGEONING POPULATION AND TECHNO-
INDUSTRY:
- ENVIRONMENTAL MODIFICATION/DESTRUCTION SUCH AS
BURNING FORESTS, STRIP MINING, CONCENTRATION AND

- CREATION OF "INDESTRUCTIBLE" TRASH (unless
some visionaries start replacing "indestructible"
plastic, etc, with biodegradable version)
- CONTAMINATION OF THE ATMOSPHERE;

WEATHER PREDICTION AND EVENTUAL MODIFICATION

a hundred HAARPS that are 100 times stronger might be

THE MASSES WILL REPLACE WAR AS A DRIVER FOR
TECHNOLOGY (e.g., rise of the internet is a result of
requirements for rapid communication within the
defense industry and government. HOWEVER,perpetuation
and improvement (e.g., world wide web)
is a result of the desire for ENTERTAINMENT and for the
COMMERCIAL value - advertising; the desire for better
entertainment has led
to improvements in audio, video and computers and in the
future, to virtual reality and then the ultimate "REAL REALITY"

-CHILDREN GROW UP ACCUSTOMED TO
WATCHING TV/VIDEO/ETC OR SITTING IN FRONT OF A
COMPUTER FOR HOURS EACH DAY
ECONOMICS:
-SOME PEOPLE WILL BE "PAID CONSUMERS" AND WILL BE
PREVENTED FROM CREATION OF WEALTH; THEIR JOBS WILL BE TO
SPEND AND USE WEALTH CREATED BY OTHERS (perhaps each person
will have a 2 year tour of duty in the "SPEND CORPS").
Trying to live every day without doing SOMETHING creative or
wealth-creating will be difficult for many people......
NARCISSISTIC GENERATION:
-WE SPEND A LOT OF TIME LOOKING AT OURSELVES AS PORTRAYED IN THE
MEDIA, BUT THE MEDIA PRESENT A DISTORTED
PICTURE OF EVERYDAY LIFE. THIS "FEEDS BACK" TO
OURSELVES AND TO OUR CHILDREN WHO SEE THE
DISTORTED PICTURE ON TV AND THINK IT IS A PORTRAYAL OF
A FORM OF REALITY.. MEDIA SELLS HUMOR IN STEREOTYPES AND
CHILDREN ASSUME THE "HUMEROUS" STEREOTYPES
ARE REALITY. (media makes instant stars of deviates, such
as people who do nasty things to others such as kill people.
Want to be a star? just do what they do on TV)

BAN THE WEB.
BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE
You think it's bad now.
Within 50 years there will be brain implants that allow
direct connection to electronic devices. This will initially
be treated as "brain augmentation"...just as computers
(and the web) are a sort of augmentation at the present time,
which is accessed indirectly by the brain (via fingers or voice,
for example).
As soon as direct implants are available people will likely
remain "plugged in" for many (or all?) hours of the day. The
instantaneous communication will make huge correlated
activities possible involving millions of people. There will
be "wars" and litigation over privacy of the brain: should the
"brainnet" (or whatever it is called) allow access to ALL parts
of the brain, or only a few? What is the responsibility of the
individual BRAIN to provide information when wanted by other
brains; what is the responsibility to protect "private thoughts"...
or perhaps there will be no private thoughts... or private parts.
(I've often thought that if everyone walked around naked there
would be more honesty in the world.) Eventually we may
discover a "portion" of the brain to which we have no
access... but aliens do!
Aliens or not, appendages will wither...and I don't mean just
arms and legs, which won't be needed once the brain communicates
directly with mechanical devices that provide nourishment. No
need to physically transport anywhere if your eyes and ears literally
cover the world. As for other appendages... well, infinite life means
infinite population unless birth is stopped. One advantage the living
have over the unborn is that the living can establish their own priorities.
The living can control the "spread of human sperm" to the point where
there is no disease that "used to be called pregnancy." No death?
Then no birth... and useless appendages wither away (sniff).
Oh, of course there will be orgasm... but safely, chemically induced
(soma anyone?).
So, this is the brave new world that even Aldous H. didn't dream about.
And it all awaits us at the other side of the web........
